When a climber begins an assent, they belay by anchoring themselves in a solid foundation. Because of that secure foundation, they are free to take risks, and are protected when difficulty arises. Similarly, for a student to have a chance at a successful life, they should be equipped early on with strong values that help them navigate difficult situations and form healthy relationships. Belay is a program that helps students discover social, emotional, and moral values through experiential learning.
How does it work?
Alongside School Programming
Schools are often tasked with teaching social and emotional standards, but due to budget difficulties and curriculum structure, teachers are often under-equipped to develop these skills in the lives of their students. Belay is a program that exists to help schools teach these critical character traits alongside existing school programing.
Large & Small Groups
We believe that learning in the context of other people is core to developing healthy social, emotional, and moral values. Belay is run with large groups of people so that whole groups share a common language, and can develop thoughts and traits together. After time together as a large group, groups are formed that allow trained small group leaders to give each student personalized attention.
Experiential Learning
We believe that Active Experiential Learning is the best way to equip students to learn social and emotional values. During a Belay program, groups use team building games that incorporate the body, the mind, and the social experience. Then, we utilize an intentional form of questioning that helps students understand what they just experienced, why it is important to their daily lives, and what steps they should take moving forward.
